The Danish festival season at a glance

The heart of the Danish festival calendar falls between early June and mid-August. The major events are spread across the country — some in Jutland, some on Funen, some on Zealand — which means travel times and arrival points vary considerably depending on where you are coming from.

Most international visitors arrive through one of two airports: Billund Airport (BLL) in central Jutland, the main gateway to West Denmark, or Copenhagen Airport (CPH) on Zealand. From there, festivals on Funen and in Jutland are typically reachable within one to two hours by road.

NorthSide Festival — Aarhus

4–6 June 2026 · Eskelunden, Aarhus (Jutland)

NorthSide is Aarhus's flagship city festival, held in the green riverside park of Eskelunden on the edge of Denmark's second city. Drawing around 35,000–40,000 guests over three days, it has built a reputation for booking international artists at the peak of their careers, alongside a strong commitment to sustainability and an all-organic food offering.

Set just outside the city, Eskelunden is easy to reach from central Aarhus, and Aarhus itself is well connected to the rest of Jutland. Many visitors arrive through Billund Airport or Aarhus Airport, or travel in from Vejle, Kolding and the surrounding region.

Heartland Festival — Egeskov Castle, Funen

18–20 June 2026 · Egeskov Slot, Kværndrup (Funen)

Heartland is Denmark's boutique festival — a refined blend of music, art, talks and gastronomy held in the grounds of Egeskov Castle, one of Europe's best-preserved Renaissance castles. With a smaller, more discerning crowd than the big city festivals, Heartland attracts an audience that values atmosphere, comfort and a sense of occasion.

Tinderbox is Funen's biggest music event, held in the forest park of Tusindårsskoven on the edge of Odense. Across three days it brings major international headliners and a lively, multi-genre programme to the island, drawing tens of thousands of visitors from across Denmark and abroad.

Odense sits roughly halfway between Jutland and Copenhagen, making Tinderbox one of the most accessible major festivals in the country. Most visitors arrive through Billund or Copenhagen airports, or travel in from across Jutland and Funen. As with any large festival, the late-night return — when everyone leaves at once — is the part most worth planning in advance.

Roskilde Festival — Roskilde, Zealand

27 June – 4 July 2026 · Roskilde (Zealand)

Roskilde is Denmark's greatest cultural institution and one of the largest music festivals in the world. For eight days on a vast site outside the town of Roskilde, around 130,000 people gather for 175+ acts across multiple stages. It is a festival on a different scale to the others — as much a temporary city as an event.

Roskilde sits on Zealand, close to Copenhagen, so most visitors arrive through Copenhagen Airport. Smukfest — Skanderborg

2–9 August 2026 · Skanderborg (Jutland)

Known as "Denmark's most beautiful festival," Smukfest takes place in a beech forest beside the lakes of Skanderborg, in the heart of Jutland — and it is one of the largest festivals in the country, drawing tens of thousands of visitors each summer. Its woodland setting and strong sense of community give it a uniquely intimate atmosphere despite its scale.
